During the medieval renaissance period we saw many great things happening such as the emergence of great artists such as Leondardo da Vinci, Michelangelo, Raphael and Botticelli. Who can forget such great works as Da Vinci’s Mona Lisa and The Last Supper; Michelangelo’s frescoes in the Sistine Chapel and Botticelli’s The Birth of Venus.

It was a time of great literature, especially because of the invention of the printing press in Germany around 1440. This certainly allowed access to the printed word for a far larger audience than the expensive handwritten manuscripts.

During this time we saw the arrival of one of the greatest English writers of all time, William Shakespeare (1564-1616). During the Renaissance period, Shakespeare made some of the most important innovations in literature and drama. His comedic works include A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Much Ado About Nothing and All’s Well That Ends Well. His historical works include Henry V and Richard III and his tragedies include Macbeth, Hamlet and Romeo and Juliet.

It may surprise you to know that hundreds of phrases that we often include in our conversations have come from Shakespeare’s works.  Here are some examples:

“All that glitters is not gold”.  This comes from The Merchant of Venice, 1596, meaning that something that looks showy isn’t necessarily of any value.

“Though this be madness, yet there is method in it” which has been colloquialised to “’there’s method in his madness’. It comes from Hamlet, 1600, meaning that there is a reason behind every apparent folly or disorder.
“The course of true love never did run smooth” which comes from A Midsummer Night’s dream, 1595.

Other great characters from the Medieval Renaissance times include everyone’s hero, the outlaw Robin Hood. Along with his band of merry men, he stole from the rich to give to the poor.  Even though the figure of Robin Hoods is believed to be purely mythological, legend has it that he was in fact Robert Loxley, the Earl of Huntingdon.

Then, there was perhaps one of the most famous female heroines of this time, Joan of Arc, who through divine guidance helped France win the Hundred Years War. She was unfortunately burned at the stake at only 19 years old for being a heretic, but was later proclaimed a martyr and made a saint.

Whatever your preference, there is a great medieval renaissance costume for you to choose from.
