The legend of Robin Hood and Maid Marian goes way back to anywhere between the fifteenth and sixteenth century. However, scholars have usually attributed the setting of the early ballads to either the thirteenth or fourteenth century. In many of the movies, there is mention of Richard the Lionheart and the holy wars which would set it in the 12th century.

The costume that Maid Marian wears in many of the movies and images of her tend to suggest that the time period was around the twelfth century.  During this period, upper class ladies wore long tunics or gowns which had tight fitting bodices, full skirts and long flaring trumpet shaped sleeves. There was a fashion towards the late twelfth century for the waistband of the skirt to be fitted low. Sometimes it was worn with a long belt, knotted over the abdomen and decorated with tassels or metal tags at the ends. Married women would wear veils over there hair. The wimple was also popular which consisted of a linen cloth that covered the throat and chin as well and fastened about the head, under the veil.
