Being a peasant especially in medieval times was extremely harsh and hard going. The feudal system of the Middle Ages had peasants working the land for the nobles under whose protection they received. They would work from dawn to dusk and get paid very little. What little they did get paid they had to pay out money in taxes and rent to both his lord and to the church which was called a tithe.
The Renaissance peasant costume was both basic and practical. Men would wear short woolen tunic belted at the waist and short woolen trousers tucked into boots. Sometimes they would wear a skin tunic over a cloth shirt. A woman would wear a woolen dress over a woolen underskirt, boots and a woolen cowl over her head and shoulders.
Other peasants such as tavern wenches would wear costumes that included tight bodices over blouses and long skirts. The top was usually low showing off an ample cleavage, probably to get the punters to drink more ale!
